Uganda’s top tennis player Duncan Mugabe, had to dig deep to overcome a hard fighting David Oringa, on Friday evening at Center Court at Lugogo stadium beating him 6-7(10-8)6-3,6-4 in three hours and 50 minutes.

Oringa took the first set and was destined to to seal the second set, but Mugabe broke him three times taking control of the game at 5-3, but he took advantage of his opponent’s weak back hand and won most of his points on that weak point.

But with the game swing both sides on the court the partisan crowd was in full voice cheering every winning game with Mugabe and Oringa fans both touting each other on the opposite sides of the center court.

“He gave me a good game and I wish we could have these tournament’s regularly,” Mugabe said. “I believe with this challenge it will improve our tennis that is me and him, but at the same time their alot of lads who have an opportunity of being great players.”

Oringa won the first challenge in recently beating Mugabe, 6-4,7-6(7-5),but this time around a rusty Mugabe, won the return challenge and winning 1 million shillings while Oringa walked off with 250,000.

The Uganda Tennis Association chairman Cedric Babu, urged the tennis fraternity to continue with this initiative so that the sport is spread and grows he thanked the association’s treasurer and organiser of the event Victor Drile.

He pledged 1 million for the next challenge through his company Kinetic Management Group. The two tennis players were using the event as a build-up to next month’s Kenya and Uganda Open.
