2014 Pool Super Cup Winners:
Men:
Skin Samona beat Scrap Yard
Women:
Indigo beat Isabella / Gals Sports Club
Skin Samona (men) and Indigo (women) pool clubs kick started the 2014 pool season in a winning style, clinching the inaugural Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) Super Cup at Club Lumas, Namirembe road over the weekend.
The two clubs, both winners of the club knock outs tourney last year, embarked on the new pool season in an emphatic mood.
Skin Samona men beat 2013 league champions, Scrap Yard 21 – 10 in thrilling sets of games that saw debut appearances from national pool open winner, Jonah ‘Joker’ Turigye and the runners up, Joseph Mutawe for the Kisenyi based club.
Indigo ladies played the newly formed Isabella/Gals sports club instead of the champions (Game city), who communicated their unwillingness to show up on the match day.
Ready for New Season:
After hoisting the Super cup, a new initiative introduced by the pool association body (PAU), Skin Samona spit fire warning the opposition and what they should expect.
“We are prepared for the new season. This victory shows Samona has been training as a team. We shall tackle each game as it approaches with seriousness”, Poulas Bisaso, the team skipper remarked after receiving a glittering trophy and Ug.X 300,000 from PAU Vice president, Umaru Mutaya.
Samona, who easily won the second half 9 – 2, signed Kyadalu club’s former skipper, Dan Mubiru from the Nansana based outfit.
On Saturday, the diminutive player however marked his debut on the star studded team as a reserve.
Super Cup Highlights:
In some of the key moments witnessed during the super cup, Skin Samona’s Amos Ndyagumanawe featured in 7 games and managed to win 5 of them including a sweet victory over national champion, Jonah Turigye.
Other star performers for Samona were Sula Matovu, Alfred ‘Black Sheep’ Gumikiriza, PAU seed 1 player, Fahad Ssewankambo and the ever cheeky Musa Ssekiriba.
Ladies’ Race too tight:
Isabella/Gals Sports club recruited massively in the close season with 2013 USPA Pool female player, Ritah Niniisma and 2013 Christmas Pool champion, Shamimu Naluggwa among the recognized new players on board.
They however faced a stern test and unlike the men’s games that were a one –off as Samona led 12 – 8 by half time, it was difficult to tell the women’s winner not until the final game of action.
The winning ladies’ team (Indigo) pocketed Ug.X 150,000 cash.
Focus shifts to the men’s senior pool league which will start this weekend. League one and the ladies’ pool leagues will commence the coming weekends with the annual Easter Cup knocking on Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
