Brian Umony’s Azam FC are the 2013/2014 Vodacom Premier League (VPL) champions after beating Mbeya City 2-1 in a league match played at Sokoine stadium on Sunday 13 April.

The historical win enabled Azam accumulate 59 points after 25 games, four points clear of closest challengers and defending champions Yanga SC though the icemakers (Azam) have a game in hand.

For the first time in Tanzanian history, Omony will spur Azam FC to represent the mainland in next season’s CAF Champions league while Emma Okwi and Hamisi ‘Friday’ Kiiza’s SC Yanga, who finished second, will play in the CAF Confederations Cup.

Founded seven years back, Azam FC together with its fans are now celebrating their first premier league trophy after finishing second last season.

Apart from Brian Omony, Azam has also ever used services of Ugandan born playuers who include striker Peter Ssenyonjo, defenders Joseph Owino and Luckson Kakolaki.

Azam is home to Ivorian born Kipre Bolou and Kenyan Humphey Mieno.

More About Azam Fotball Club

Indeed, there was no looking behind as Azam FC with star-studded players became a force to reckon in the domestic league. Azam FC finished in eighth position in its first season of top flight football. But the team made a tremendous improvement the following season finishing in the third position.
