Thursday, 17th April 2014 will forever remain engraved in the sporting history of St Joseph’s Kisubi Technical Institute.
Inevitably, the mood at the Institute was electrifying with the euphoria visible to faces of all – the students and the staff and it could even be smelt from a distance.
It is the day that a unique sport – Woodball, absolutely new before many was introduced on the enticing sporting menu of the Institute whose long history dates as far back as 1911.
Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) is on a vigorous effort to spread the game to the countryside as fast as possible and Kisubi Institute is one such of the lucky places that has joined the Woodball bandwagon in Uganda.
Principal Honored:
“It is an honour to have the game introduced here. We shall support its growth and prosperity to the students and staff and possibly to the surrounding local communities of Kisubi and Kawuku”, David Iga, the Institute’s principal told Kawowo Sports in an exclusive interview.
By 10 a.m, students and staff at the institute were taken through the terminology, rules and regulations of the game by UWbF officials, John Baptist Kateregga and Tonny Ssenkumba Lumala.
Terms as the ‘mallet’, ‘swing’, ‘gate’, ‘fairway‘, ‘o.b‘ ‘score card‘, and many others were being heard for the first time in the ear pinnars of the majority.
Strange but Simple Game:
Majority of the new game’s enthusiasts were perplexed by the scoring of the game. “You mean the one with the lowest scores is winner?”, Lydia Acen wondered.
The ease at which the game is played made many fall for it. “Since this game does not involve running, no physical confrontation and contact, it is the best i have ever seen”, confessed Ibrahim Kawuki, one of the best individuals after a 3 gate practise round.
Every step was a success courtesy of the head of sports department, Godfrey Bukenya, the sports friendly administration, the willingness of the woodball converts and the Uganda Woodball Federation.
Kisubi Institute, welcome aboard the Woodball world. Let the mallets swing and the glass roll on as the ball outmaneuvers through the gate.
