The Bamburi rugby super series will attract East African attention this weekend, when the tournament commences on Saturday 26th April at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds, Kampala.

It is expected run for five weekends at different venues across Uganda and Kenya in Kampala, Kakamega, Nakuru, Machakos and Nairobi.

This year’s edition is set to involve six franchises unlike last year’s that gathered eight in Papa, Kiboko, Nyumbu, Victoria, Ndovu, Mamba, Rwenzori and Kengewa.

Protector Rugby Super Series franchises, Protectors who lost 17-19 in the final will play as Victoria while champions Crocs will feature as Rwenzori.

Rwenzori has been the most successful side from Uganda having reached the finals in 2011 and 2013 since 2009 when Uganda’s duo joined the fray.

Kenya’s Papa and Ndovu who beat Rwenzori 24-18 last year to lift the 2013 edition return, Kifaru and Chui making the new sides.

Kifaru is the universities’ franchise previously known as Kengewa and Sharks in the previous editions, while Chui is the franchise that played as Nyumbu in last year’s tournament.

Over the years, the sponsorship of the series has switched since its inauguration from Unga limited in 2004 to UAP Insurance in 2005 till Bamburi took over to date.

Bamburi has injected Kshs 20 million in this year’s edition thus proving a major pillar in the development of rugby in East Africa.

Teams have been drawn into two pools, A comprising Ndovu, Chui and Victoria while B consists of Rwenzori, Papa and Kifaru.
