The National 7’s rugby tournament has received a major boost this morning with KCB Bank sinking 72 million Uganda shillings into the rugby circuit that is expected to kick-off from June 14-July 12 across the country.
“Our sponsorship of the KCB National Sevens circuit is underpinned by the notion of building our teams from grassroots level,” the KCB Bank Uganda managing director Joram Kiarie, said at the unveiling at Kyadondo rugby ground. “This we believe can help the teams continue to grow in stature in the region and the world.”
The four circuit tournament will see Kyadondo Rugby club host the inaugural game followed by Makerere grounds, Mbale grounds and final leg at Legends rugby club.
Twelve rugby pooled in six pools will be vying for the overall prize of 3 million shillings with the runners-up taking 2 million while the team in third position gets 1 million.
“This circuit acts as a talent identification for the union and the coaches,” Andrew Owor, the Uganda Rugby Union chairman said. ” “This is the only sevens tournament that we have and I am glad for the KCB partnership.”
The 12 teams taking part include Heathens, Kobs, Toyota Buffaloes, Pirates, Ezee Money Rhinos, Impis, Sadolin Mongers, Mbale Elephants, Lira Bulls, Rams, Sheraton Stallions and Jinja Hippos.
For the first time four ladies rugby sides will also be competing they include Entebbe Sharks, Entebbe Eagles, Whales and Jinja while the men’s will include Stallions, Boks, Kifaru and Tiger they will all be playing in the U-19 category.
