15 pool players have already booked their slots for this year’s Nile Special National Pool Championships.

“These 15 will be added to those yet to qualify from the other regions yet to play across the country and the 8 top seeded players”, Tom Kasumba, a Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) Umpire clarified to Kawowo Sports.

This year’s national finals like last year will be held at the Indoor stadium in Lugogo on the 6th September 2014.

Qualification for the 2014 event started in May with the mini qualifiers, a prerequisite for the regionals which started last Friday.

Then in came the regional qualifiers where Buganda region entered the fray first with action at Drakes Pub in Masaka.

Godfrey Lubega, Glorious Ssenyonjo and Bashir Kamya made it from Masaka

Salim Akankwansa, often left out of the Nile Special national open because of age (was previously a minor) finally surfaced at the qualifiers and made recorded his statement at Mubende club.

He qualified alongside, Mutibwa Bogere and Francis Kamuhonda.

The following day, action was held at Cheers Pub in Mukono District. Nelson Kundeeli, Saulo Mugerwa and Christopher Mukasa booked their berths.

At Big up Club in Kasana Luwero, Ali Ssebana used his experience to topple the pack that also saw Moses Wasswa and Vicent Nyanzi make it.

At the Entebbe Municipal regional finals held at the Red Roosters bar, Godfrey Ssetumba beat little known Willy Lukenge to come first. Dezzo Ssewajje was the other top perfomer from Entebbe.

The overall winner will drive home with a brand new Toyota Brevis vehicle, a pool table and Ug.shs 2M.

The first runner up also gets a pool playing table and Ug.shs 1M.

Each of the 16 best finishers will each receive varying cash prizes basing on the position.

“The national pool open is so competitive this year because so many players were engaged this time round”, Michael Mawanda, the Association publicist adds.

Jonah ‘Joker’ Turigye is the national champion, having beaten Herman Mutawe in last year’s thrilling and grueling finals.

The regional qualifiers continue this coming weekend.
