St Mary’s Kitende won their third U21 National Junior Volleyball Championship in six years when they defeated Gombe Secondary School 3-1 at Kings College Budo last weekend. Kitende, who last won the title 2011, showed signs of supremacy from the onset in their attack and net defense.

Led by Nkumba navy’s Cathberth Malinga and KAVC’s Daudi Okello, Kitende breathed through the first set 25-11. They later stretched their lead by winning the second 25-16 but complacency almost cost Kitende as their attackers and defenders took everything for granted.

Gombe won the third 25-19, Kitende recovered to claim the fourth 25-19. “We have always been getting to the final but failing to win the title,” said Kitende captain Malinga. “But after beating Kinaawa 3-0 in the semis we knew we had a chance in the final, Gombe came to fight but we fought better,” he added.
Both Kitende and 2013 winners Kinaawa were seeded but the latter failed to top his group losing to Gombe 3-0, hence falling Kitende’s path at the semis. In the girls U21 category Trust High School won a fourth straight title after defeating defeating Kinaawa Mugogo 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-23) .

In the boys and girls U16 Kawanda SS defeated Good Heart 2-0 (25-12, 25-22) while Maryhill lost to Iganga Girls respectively.
