ELGON CUP RESULTS:

U19: Uganda 15-10 Kenya

Women: Uganda 15-33 Kenya

Men: Uganda 21-14 Kenya

Rugby Cranes were the better side in the first leg of the ninth edition of the Elgon Cup after they defeated the Kenya Lions 21-14 at the Kyandondo Rugby Grounds on Saturday.

It kicked off as a tough encounter after Kevin Makmot and Bishop Onen missed their penalties. But it was makmot who got on the scoreboard first with a penalty.

Midway the first half Kenya touched down and were quick to convert taking a 7-3 lead. Onen muscled through the Kenyan back-line before registering Uganda’s first try before Makmot made it 8-7.

The second half saw Uganda enjoy much of the possession and a team try followed a Makmot master kick to stretch the lead to 18-7. Moments later Makmot looked comfortable kicking another penalty the right direction to make it 21-7.

Kenya touched down moments later and as soon as they converted, the game ended sending a full Kyandondo house into wild cheers.

The return leg will be in seven day’s time in Nairobi and if Uganda wins they will win their third Elgon Cup since 2013.

Lady Rugby Cranes lost 15-33 and will need to overturn the result if they are to defend ‘Migingo’ Cup.

The inaugural U19 version ended in favour of Uganda with a 15-10 scoreline. All points were scored in the first half and the youthful side will also be looking to win the return Leg in Nairobi.
