Uganda’s representatives KCC FC are on the brink of storming quarter finals of this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup after earning a narrow 1-0 victory over Burundi’s Atletico in a boring encounter played at Kigali Regional stadium, Nyamirambo.
Brian Umony scored the only goal of the game in the first half that decided the game.
Umony gave KCC FC the lead in the 22nd minute by converting a penalty after he was fouled by skipper Francis Nongwe inside the 16 yard area.
The number 23 was brought down by Nongwe after chest controlling a brilliant pass from Tom Masiko.
From then on, KCC FC sat back to defend the slim lead which they managed till half time though they could have ended with a 2-0 margin had Majwega’s shot not hit the bar.
The second half saw little action with KCC FC creating less though Umony and Majwega were twice denied by good defensive play from the Burundi side.
At the other end, Sakka Mpiima had to be at his best clear from danger when Atletico threatened through substitute Zacharie Hakizimana.
The win means KCC FC now sits on top of group B with six points followed by Djibouti’s Telecom FC, APR FC and Atletico (3 points) in that respective order whilst Gor Mahia sit bottom of the log.
KCC FC’s last group game against APR FC on Sunday in a game that may decide who finishes top of the group.
KCC FC now needs a draw to confirm a place in the last eight.
