Atletico (Burundi) 2-1 Telecom (Djibouti)
Burundi’s Atletico gave themselves a good chance of reaching the last eight of this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup after snatching a late win against Djibouti’s Telecom.
Fiston Nzomukunda netted on the 86th minute to sink a resilient Djibouti side cancelling out Mustapha Mohamed equaliser. Andre Tokoto had given the Burundi side a lead as early as ten minutes.
The Burundi side were dominant in the opening quarter of the game and deservedly got in front in the 10th minute through Andre Tokoto’s free kick.
The number 17 curled the ball over the wall and direct into the roof of the net to send the few fans in the stands into frenzy.
Telecom grew into the game later and began to launch attacks on the Burundi side and hit the equaliser on the half hour mark thanks to a thunderbolt strike off the edge by Mustapha Mohamed.
After recess, Telecom sat back to defend as they opted for a counter but couldn’t hold on as Atletico launched endless attacks on their goal and the Burundi side’s effort were paid in the 86th minute when substitute Nzomukunda netted the winner.
The win lifts Atletico to third on the log from four games while Telecom remains fourth on the table.
Atletico can go through if Gor Mahia fail to win one of their remaining two games and also hope Telecom fails to earn victory over the KPL champions.
The result also confirms KCC FC as through to the last eight.
