Bright Stars FC 1-0 BUL FC
Bright Stars FC goalie became the first custodian to register his name on the score sheet in the 2014/15 Uganda Premier League season after his stunning free kick ensured victory for his side against BUL FC.
Following a dull goalless first half that saw both teams almost create nothing, Bright Stars FC started the second period on a high and should have gone 1-0 up in the 46th minute but BUL FC goalie Zakaria Nsubuga was to thank for saving Hassan Kikoyo’s low shot inside the 16 yard area.
From the onset, the hosts were dominant in possession but still created no clear opportunities and survived being punished when Robert Acema’s shot from the edge of the 18 yard area missed target by inches.
The moment for Bright Stars came in the 75th minute when referee awarded them a free kick a few metres after the half way line and astonishingly, goalie Kigonya left his territory and took it straight into the net.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, the Kawempe based club held on for three points which takes them second on the league table with 7 points same as table leaders Police FC who beat SC Villa 2-1 in Kavumba but the Cops have a better goal difference.
REACTIONS:
“I have always practiced free kicks and scored lots in training but had never scored one in a match. Am delighted with my performance today and scoring the winning goal is fantastic. The most important thing however is the three points. ” – Mathias Kigonya, Bright Stars FC goalkeeper.
“It was a tough game but in the end, we got the three points. It’s still too early in the season but being second on the log is good news. We shall keep focus and not get excited but all in all, am happy with my boys.” – Paul Kiwanuka, Bright Stars FC coach
“In football, winning and losing are twins. But you only win when you deserve to. I think we didn’t do enough today especially in the midfield. We were not creative enough and credit to the opponents, they were the better side.” – BUL FC Coach Kefa Kisala
