Uganda Cranes media officer, Fred ‘Malibu’ Katende has hinted on relinquishing his duties as the team’s official spokesperson.

“Following several failed AFCON and World Cup qualification campaigns, I believe I have served to the best of my ability and its time I let someone else take over the post” Katende told Kawowo Sports during an exclusive interview.

Katende’s revelation could be as shocking as the news itself.

This follows Uganda Cranes recent failed AFCON qualification to the 2015 finals that will take place in Equatorial Guinea in January next year.

“I will not give my final position until then (time of official announcement) but I have advised FUFA on what needs to be done and how” Katende added.

News in the corridors indicate Katende, as one of the experienced staff on the team over the years has advised the Federation on certain basics and technicalities of how to efficiently run the national team.

The entire Uganda Cranes team technical team headed by head coach, Milutin ‘Micho’  Sedrojevic is under intense pressure after that dismissal performance that saw the team bow out of the AFCON finals with the painful 0 – 2 loss in Morocco against Guinea.

Who will replace Katende?

Should Katende’s decision come to pass, FUFA will have to appoint a new Cranes media officer with several personalities tipped for the job.

Baba F.M’s Joseph Mutaka (Uganda Cranes – CHAN media officer), Bukedde T.V’s Kenneth Muwanga (Uganda Cranes – CECAFA media officer), Pearl F.M’s Hassan Kirunda and surprisingly the FUFA spokesman, Ahmed Hussein are tipped for the job.

Impeccable sources indicate Katende is already lining another job with a city radio station after learning of the latest Confederation of African Football (CAF) communications policy that gives the official federation spokesman the full authority on the national teams.

Inside sources at FUFA indicate Katende has already bid farewell to many of his friends (during the flight back from Morocco to Entebbe) before coming up with a personal official statement.

Katende has a 7 year working experience as the Uganda Cranes media officer.

He has previously worked as a sports journalist with Voice of Africa radio and WBS T.V.

David Isabirye is a senior staff writer for Kawowo Sports where he covers most of the major events.
