Uganda Premier League (Week 13): SCVU 1-1 Bright Stars F.C – 12th Dec 2014

Despite conceding two penalties and  playing with 10 men for the closing half an hour, Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) gallantly endured to a 1 all draw with Bright Stars F.C at the Phillip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Monday.

SCVU started the game with Uganda Cranes central defender, Savio Kabugo leading the attack line alongside the diminutive but pacy winger cum striker, Farouk Kawooya.

Despite the mis-match, Morley Byekwaso’s outfit looked the better team with a large portion of possession although Kabugo seemed isolated like the famous Migingo Island on Lake Victoria.

The possession soon reaped dividends in the 22rd minute as a well executed defense splitter from towering midfielder, David Ndihabwe presented Kawooya with just two options on the plate, side stepping goal keeper, Davis Mutebi and slotting the ball in an empty net.

The beautiful strike was his first ever goal since joining Victoria University from FUFA Big League side, The Saints F.C.

As the match looked destined for the half time, Moses Nsubuga who had an enterprising opening 45 minutes released Joshua Kawadwa into the space.

Kawadwa met the ball first but was fouled inside the area by SCVU skipper, Martin Mpuuga.

Referee, Khalifan Kanakulya might have missed the ‘professional foul’ but he did not hesitate to award the Kawempe based side the penalty and a booking for the culprit.

Skipper Benard Muwanga calmly slotted the ball to goalie Joseph SSebuliba’s right but the latter was too late to save the goal bound shot.

It was not long till Kanakulya called for the half time break as the two teams tied 1 goal apiece.

The second stanza of the game presented both team’s tacticians with the options for change as each side desperately pressed the three points at the end of the day.

Fred Kajoba withdrew Jimmy Lule Kibirige for John Kokas Opejo, Peter Atugonza replaced by Ausi Kaaya and later an injured Opejo came out for Anthony Bagoole.

Moments after the game restart, SCVU were reduced to 10 men when Mpuuga was judged to have dragged striker Kawadwa to the ground in the forbidden area.

For the foul, a Bright Stars F.C won their second penalty on the day – much to the disbelief of the entire SCVU playing and non playing contingent.

Mpuuga hesitated to walk out of the playing area and it took the sweet pleas from his coach to head for an early shower.

Sula Ssebunza Sekagya (biological brother to former Uganda Cranes skipper, Ibrahim Ssekagya ) missed the resultant kick.

In quick response, Morley Byekwaso recalled Kabugo to central defense, with drawing goal scorer Kawooya for another pacy striker, Dan Nsubuga before left back Brian Ochwo limped out for Fred Agandu.

Both sides pressed for the winning strike with SCVU coming closet when Nsubuga missed the easiest of contacts onto Muwadda’s cross from the right deep in the game.

1 all read the finale scoreline in bold meaning Bright Stars F.C remain 6th with 20 points as SCVU are now 10th with 13 points.

There will be 7 Uganda Premier League games on Tuesday.
