Algeria were 2-0 winners over Senegal, qualifying for the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations from Group C.

Riyad Mahrez and Nabil Bentaleb goals guided the side to their ninth appearance at the stage as Senegal got condemned to a painful exit.

Senegal headed into the final round of games as group leaders, but it prove just not enough to push them further to the next round.

Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City controlled Mawdjid Bougherra’s free-kick from deep and converted in the 11th minute after having located a gap between the right wing-back and centre-back.

Senegal tried to dominate the second half in attempts to find their way back into the game but Spurs’ Nabil Bentaleb slotted home with eight minutes remaining off Sofiane Feghouli’s pass from long range.

Sadio Mane should have hauled Senegal back into the contest off his run, but the Southampton striker blazed way over the goal squandering opportunity in the area.

Senegal had to make a 29th-minute change, when Pape Souare could play no more, going off for Cheikh M’Bengue. The latter sustained a head injury in a challenge with Aissa Mandi.

Algeria Goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi was out to deny Mame Biram Diouf before Senegal brought in Papiss Cisse in place of midfielder Pape Diop nine minutes into the second half.

Giresse’s men, piled more pressure on Algeria as Mane who later went off for Dame N’Doye failed to capitalize on Stephane Badji’s low ball in the 61st minute, a deflection off the referee.
