Four the fourth straight year, the top tier football league in Uganda will have another name. The second round of the league is yet to start and it will be called the Fufa Azam Premier League (FAPL) after the Tanzanian Pay Television Company took over the sponsorship and broadcasting rights of the league.
The 2011/2012 saw the league be named the Uganda Super League (USL) though when Uganda Breweries took over sponsorship under their Bell brand, the league was called the Bell Super League.
A season later we had the Bell Super League continue but on the other hand started the Fufa Super League (FSL) in the 2012/2013 season and the 2013/2014 season. Two leagues were ran concurrently in the former season.
The start of the 2014/2015 season had the league change names again to Uganda Premier League (UPL) under the guidance of government. And before we could get used to the UPL name, Azam took over the naming rights and it’s now called the Fufa Azam Premier League.
We wait to see for how long the APL name will stay and which name with the league be baptized again in the event that Azam, clubs or Fufa decides to file for divorce.
