Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has launched the country’s first women national league- Uganda Women Elite League.

The women top league which is the first one of that kind in Ugandan football has been launched by FUFA Boss Eng. Moses Magogo.

Speaking at the historical launch in FUFA‘s weekly press conference on Wednesday, Magogo said:

Today launch marks a new era for women’s football in Uganda, the Uganda Women Elite League. When I came to power, I always wanted to be innovative and such developments show how the federation is moving places.

He (Magogo) further applauded the role played by FUFA executive member in charge of women football Mrs. Mariam Kalinga for her tireless efforts to spur the league into existence. He also displayed the brand log for the new league.

I would also want to recognize the efforts that have been put in by some individuals to make this crucial league a reality especially Mrs. Mariam Kalinga.

Uganda has become the latest country in Africa to have a national women’s league. In 2013, Uganda’s U-20 team withdrew from the world cup qualifiers.

The country wide competition will comprise of eight top flight teams and games will be played on the home and away basis. The eight teams that will go down in history to have played in the first women league in Uganda are: Western United women football team, Kakiira women football team, Ajax women football team, Kawempe Muslim, Buikwe she red stars, She- corporates, Eastern heroes and Alleluyah 2008.

The united league will commence on 21st Feb 2015 with the first round ending in April and the second will be played between May and August.

Champions will be rewarded Shs 3 million and Gold medals while the second will get Shs 2 million.
Until now, the women championships had been played in separate regions, with no national champion emerging.
