Following their return to the Super 8 at the end of the 2013/2014 Nile Special Uganda Rugby Premiership, Impis suffered defeat at the hands of Pirates to return to the championship just after one season.

Pirates defeated Impis 29-25 at Legends Rugby Grounds on Saturday, the Makerere based side getting relegated after their last match of this season, 2014/2015.

Daniel Ortega inspired Impis to an early lead but Pirates came from behind through Isaac Rujumba’s try, efforts from replacement Ivan Magomu and Conrad Wanyama’s leveler before later putting up the winner to sink their opponents.

Impis won only twice this season, beating up on Ezee Money Rhinos 13-07 and Mutoni Warriors 25-18. Both wins came at home, Makerere Rugby Grounds aka Graveyard and lost the other 12 matches.

Coach Brian Power’s men came into their last match against Pirates, last on the Premiership log, with a total of 8 points while second last Mutoni Warriors were at 9 points.

Warriors were to take on Sadolin Mongers in Entebbe and required a win with a bonus point to confirm a place in the top tier next season.

Impis required any win against Pirates coupled with a loss for Mutoni Warriors but Impis lost while Warriors were defeated by Mongers 14-12.

Despite both losses for Mutoni Warriors and Impis, both secured one point each for losing by fewer than 7 points. It meant Warriors would survive relegation because they kept their one point margin at 10 points against Impis at 9.

Impis’ hopes of another season in the top 8 were eventually dented since their pillars in Augustine Kasansula, Adnan Mutebi, Echodu Emmanuel and Keith Seruyange moved to Kobs before the start of the season.
