FM Harold Wanyama beat fellow Olympian Mathias Ssonko in the sixth round of the Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship Qualifiers to get to 5.5 points out of six in a comfortable lead with two rounds to spare.
The games being played at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga end today with the last two decisive rounds in which the Uganda Chess Federation seeks to get the top 4 to qualify to represent Uganda at the zonal event to be hosted by Uganda in April 2015.
Closely following after 6 rounds was Bob Bibasa and Raphael Buti at 5 points each. Bibasa beat Olympian Patrick Kawuma in the sixth round as Buti rounded up Daniel Baagadde.
FM Arthur Ssegwanyi who has struggled in the Qualifiers follows with 4.5 points after beating Richard Tugume. Also on 4.5 points is Kawuma, Simon Gonza and Haruna Nsubuga.
In the ladies category, Goretti Angolikin and Christine Namaganda are still in a joint lead with 5.5 points each followed by Grace Kigeni at 4.5, Joan Nakimuli and Phiona Mutesi at 3.5 points apiece.
