Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei emerged Gold medal winner at the Africa Junior Championships on Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia beating Kenya’s Davis Kiplongat and Ethiopia’s Gurmessa Nega Fekansa to finish number one in the men’s 10,000 metres.
Cheptegei finished in first place in 29 minutes, 58 seconds and 70 micro seconds ahead of second placed Davis Kiplongat, 1 second and 36 micro seconds behind the Ugandan. Gurmessa Nega Fekansa came third in 30:02:38.
On emerging winner, 19-year-old became the first Ugandan athlete to win the men’s 10000m after Boniface Kiprop and Martin Kurong.
Boniface first competed in the Championships in 2001 in Mauritius where he finished 2nd but later represented in 2003 where finished top in Cameroon.
The accolades stepped up Cheptegei’s profile after emerging- the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships 10,000m gold medalist, finishing second in the TCS World 10,000m in Bangalore plus the World University Cross Country Championships where he took Gold.
