The draws of the 2015 AfroBasket were held on Saturday night at the Carthage Acropolium in Tunisia’s capital, Tunis
Uganda’s Silverbacks were drawn against tournament hosts Tunisia, continental heavy weights Nigeria and one of the three Wild Cards that will make the complete picture of the AfroBasket.
The first phase of the tournament will be played in a round robin format – with every team taking on its three group opponents. All teams will then advance to the Round of 16, where Group A crosses with Group C (A1-C4, etc.), and Group B with D. The tournament will then be played in a knockout format from the Round of 16 through to the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.
AfroBasket 2015 will be held from 19-30 August in the Tunisian cities of Nabeul and Tunis and the tournament serves as a qualifying event for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
It is the third time that Tunisia will be staging the AfroBasket, having previously hosted it in 1965 and 1987.
The teams designated as ‘Wild Cards 1, 2 and 3’ who will round out the event’s 16-team field will be announced at the end of April.
The three Wild Cards will be chosen from Senegal, Guinea, South Africa, Rwanda, Algeria, Central African Republic and Congo
Senegal and Algeria are the most cited countries to make the Wild Cards. They are followed by the Central African Republic and South Africa who are neck and neck, then Rwanda and Congo while Guinea is the least among the candidates mentioned countries.
Uganda qualified for the continental show piece following the historic 69-61 win over Rwanda behind Steven Omony’s 25 points night to finish second behind Zone V champs Egypt.
