Africa Chess Zone 4.2 Tourney:
18th – 25th April 2015

At least 40 chess players from 7 countries within the Africa zone 4.2 region are expected at the 2015 chess tournament in Kampala at the City Oil (Kira road main hall) that starts Saturday.
On Friday, the event has been officially launched at the City Tyres main headquarters in industrial area.
City Tyres has supported Uganda Chess Federation in a partnership that seeks to ensure successful hosting of championship with the venue and trophies.
We thank City Tyres who have provided the venue (City Oil Kamwokya playing Hall) fully equipped with amenities required for a conducive international FIDE rated tournament of this magnitude. The sponsors have also provided six prestigious trophies for the top three winners in the Open and Ladies categories
Vianney Lujja, President, Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) remarked.
One of the players set to represent team Uganda, Mathias Ssonko echoed the level of preparedness of the team and promised a better show.
We have been training well and expect a great tournament at home
Ssonko promised.
The Management of City Tyres showcased some of the trophies on offer for the excelling players and assured the media of ensuring a successful event in ambient playing facilities.
City Tyres has been partnering with UCF to promote Chess in Uganda.
The company sponsors the annual National Junior Chess Championship and at last year’s event, CityTyres involvement enabled the Federation to attract 700 participants in the National Junior Chess Championship.
Participating Countries:
Countries have started to arrive ahead of kick off on Saturday afternoon.
The participants at this year’s tournament are; Egypt, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and the hosts, Uganda.
Sudan have pulled out of the event at the 11th hour citing logistical reasons.
The target for this year’s junior event (to be held in August) this year with support from City Tyres is over 1000 participants.
The official opening ceremony starts at 2:00 pm on Saturday 18 April 2015 at City Oil.
The sponsors have intimated that they need to see a big turn out in form of fans at the opening ceremony.
Lujja hinted on the 4500 Euros staked as the total prize money to be won by the excelling players at the week long FIDE rated tournament, whose winner will represent the zone at the world chess championships later this year.
