2015 Africa Chess Championship:
2nd – 13th May 2015
Cairo, Egypt
Raphael Buti is set to represent Uganda at the Africa Individual Chess Championship.
The tournament gets underway on 2nd May and will close by the 12th May 2015 in Cairo, Egypt.
Buti, who had an impressive performance (where he finished 4th) at the Zone 4.2 Africa chess meet, departed for Cairo aboard Egypt Air on Friday morning.
In his best performance, he Egyptian Grandmaster El Gindy Essam in round 5 at the Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship held in Kampala.
The Federation decided to grant the representation at the Africa Individual to the best performing player(s) in the zonal excluding the eventual winner Arthur Ssegwanyi in the spirit of spreading opportunities and exposure to as many players as possible as Ssegwanyi is already assured of a berth at the World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan later this year. We wish him the best of luck at the event
Uganda Chess Federation said in a statement.
The second best performer after Ssegwanyi, CM Patrick Kawuma, had passport issues (his passport was due to expire soon) hence extension of the opportunity to the next best performer, Buti.
Sponsorship for the trip wasn’t easily forthcoming so the player partially contributed towards his ticket costs..
At the just ended zonal, Buti scored 6 out of 9 points, a score that makes him eligible for FIDE Master status.
