Kenyan national women volleyball coach David Lung’aho is one who will respect his opponent no matter the status.

That will be same the approach he will apply as the Malkia spikers launch their title defense at the 18th edition of the African Women Championship against Mauritius on Friday in Nairobi.

A lot is at stake as the eventual winner in Nairobi will qualify for the 2015 Women’s African Volleyball Championship in Tokyo Japan from August 22 to September 6.

“That is our aim and we our plan is to start strongly even as we study our opponents” Lung’aho told nairobinews.co.ke

“Although Kenya and Algeria share a long history, we have to qualify for the FIVB World Cup,” he added referring to the other strong side in the pool.

Kenya and Mauritius are in pool A alongside Botswana and Algeria, the latter has been able to interrupt Kenya’s run since 2005 when they won the 2009 title in Batna.

Pool B has Senegal, Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia who are the other side likely to challenge Kenya in the absence of Egypt.

The North Africans beat Kenya the last time the two teams met at the World Championship qualifiers in Nairobi last year.

“We came here to have the best result and if we have any opportunity to beat Kenya, we are more than willing to do it,” The Carthage Eagles coach Massel Muny said.

Tunisia themselves boast of three title in five final appearance, the last one coming in 1999.

While the first two were way back in 1985 and 1987, they will open up the campaign with North African rivals Morocco on Saturday.
