African Volleyball Women Championship record holders Kenya lost twice to Peru and Colombia in straight sets, (25-18, 25-12, 25-23) and (25-21, 25-14, 25-20) respectively in the Group three (Pool O) games played in Mexico. Only managing a 3-2 (25-16, 20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9) win over Mexico.

We struggled in some of our strong points, like reception and court cover which is not acceptable, we have to better that if we are to perform better in Algeria

Said team libero Elizabeth Wanyama said before the games in Algeria started.

Kenya came to Algeria for the Pool Q games, desperate to better their Mexican show and they did just that. Started with a win a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17 and 25-22) over Mexico and a (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) over Australia.

And for the first time on Sunday, the David Lung’aho coached side defeated Algeria 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-13, 15-13) at their own backyard.  Mercy Moim led with 26 points, skipper Khadambi Brackcides had 16, Evelyne Makuto 14 and Jepngetich Ruth 11.

It was Kenya’s fourth win at the games with just two defeats and had the Malkia Strikers finish third in Group Three on ten points, just like Cuba.

Kenya had a better set ratio, 3.75 compared to Cuba’s 1.2, even the set ratio, Kenya stood at 1.229 while Cuba managed 0.065. Colombia and Peru were joint winners of the group with 15 points, but Colombia’s set ratio (4.000) superior to that of Peru (3.375)

Kenya now have to negotiate their way into Group Two, a win over Australia on July 11 at the AIS Arena, Canberra, Australia, will guarantee them direct promotion to the FIVB Grand Prix Group two. Or will have to do so through a play with the loser between Colombia and Peru on July 12.
