July 11, 2015 marked exactly five years since the Kampala bomb blasts at Kyandodo Rugby Grounds and the Ethiopian Village in Kabalagala.
Coincidentally, Saturday – the final day of the Africa Rugby Tier 1B tourney – was exactly five years since the incident that claimed over 74 lives of Ugandans who were watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup final between Holland and Spain.
The Rugby Cranes led by man of the match Michael Wokorach played like wounded lions in their last Tier 1B game against Botswana a game they won 59-10.
Wokorach and company were not only looking to seal their promotion to Tier 1A but also to respect the souls of those who perished five years ago.
I was praying for our brothers and sisters who died on that day; they were watching soccer but died on a rugby pitch. I really wanted to give my best, I was never going to accept to be defeated at home and I want to thank my teammates for the spirited fight we gave today.
Wokorach who scored three of Uganda’s nine tries on the day, underneath his number 13 jersey he wore a white t-shirt with words ‘RIP July 11 Victims’
Just before the game kicked off, six wreaths were laid on the memorial stone that was built at that the ground and a moment of silence was observed as a sign of respect.

Apart from Wokorach, Scot Olouch (2), Ronald Musajjagulyanyago, Justin Kimono, Davies Kiwalabye and Ronald Ssebuliba scored the other tries.
Kevin Makmot converted five of the seven, while James Injongat who came on for him later in the second half had two conversions.
