Peter Jaker, 17 and Joan Nakimuli are the new National Juniors Chess champions in Uganda.

To achieve the feat, the teenagers beat off a strong field of opposition that tallied to at least 141 participants at the National Juniors’ meet that took place at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel.

Whereas Jaker won the male event, Nakimuli emerged victorious in the female gender.

A message of congratulation from the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) showered Jaker and Nakimuli with praise;

This is Jaker and Nakimuli’s  first major chess championship. The federation congratulates the new National Junior Champions upon their victory.

The pair dethroned Benjamin Mukumbya and Stella Babirye as the boys and girls’ respective National Junior Champions, who triumphed during the 2014 event.

Jaker and Nakimul will now represent the country at the World Junior Chess Championship later this year.

The World Junior Chess Championships will be hosted in Halkidiki, Greece from October 24 – November 6, 2015.

David Isabirye is a senior staff writer for Kawowo Sports where he covers most of the major events.
