Uganda’s captain Rebecca Ssengonzi, won the country’s first medal at the Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt that started yesterday and will end on October 20.

The US based Ssengonzi, won a silver medal in the girls 15-16, 100 meters butterfly with a time of 1.03.74 seconds to get the country’s campaign at this Africa swimming event to a good start the championship is a pre-Olympic qualifier for African nations.

The event was won by Zimbabwe’s Robyn Lee, who clocked 1.03.51 to claim the girls Gold medal while Algeria’s Nesrine Medjahed, won Bronze in a time of 1.04.94.

Uganda’s team at the championships includes Princess Katrina Ssangalyambogo, Nabil Saleh, Jesse Ssengonzi, Fadhil Saleh and Tendo Mukalazi.

Other members of Uganda’s team include coach Peter Mugisha,  assistant coach Lindsay Takkunen,  the president of Uganda Swimming Federation Don Rukare, who is the vice president of Africa’s swimming governing body CANA, Uganda Swimming Federation general secretary Andrew Mwase
