Herbert Wafula has been replaced by Tolbert Onyango as the new head coach of Uganda Rugby Cranes sevens team ahead of December’s 2016 Rio Olympics qualifiers.

Wafula had temporarily stepped in for Onyango for the recently concluded Safari sevens tournament, one in which the nation finished Shield cup runners-up following their loss to 14-10 loss to Zambia as Samurai clinched the title off a 20-19 win over Shujaa in the final.

According to Uganda Rugby Union CEO Ramsey Olinga, “Tolbert has always been the national 7s team coach but Wafula stepped in because Tolbert had left Uganda and was staying in Nairobi.”

In 2013, Onyango coached Uganda in the Confederation of Africa 7s held in Mombasa, and now returns after Wafula’s Safari Sevens spell that had him win only once, against Burundi.

Uganda is already in training with Onyango and the pack is looking forward to representing Africa in Brazil after crashing at the Bowl semi final stage in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Rugby Sevens where they lost to Canada 32-00

The Cranes are in pool C with Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
