Duncan Mugabe has claimed his third Uganda Tennis Open title on Saturday after defeating David Oringa in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Mugabe won the men’s singles final at Centre Court, Lugogo on a cloudy afternoon and all he could say was; “I am happy,” after putting in his all to add another title to those 2010 and 2011.
From downing Edward Odonchen 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter finals, Mugabe stormed the finals with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-1 over John Oduke’s son, Simon Ayella.
Painful memories of elimination by Rwandan pair of eventual winner Jean Claude Gasigwa (RIP) and Dieudonne Habiyambere respectively at the semifinal stage of the same tourney in 2013 did not deter him thanks to the effort he says he put in.
“I was a bit nervous in the first set but I put in so much effort. We both committed many mistakes but I held on and met the expectations of my fans, friends and family,” the 22-year-old told Daily Monitor.
Opponent Oringa, came off a highly contested semi final that saw him win 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 against Kenyan Ibrahim Kibet. The encounter was washed out on Friday in the third set, Oringa on-course to a marvelous comeback after a difficult start.
Rwandan Megan Ingabire lost to women’s top seed Changawa 6-3, 6-1 garnering her maiden singles Open title.
