Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has defended Ugandan Ivan Bukenya’s omission from the team’s squad that traveled to face Maritzburg United on Saturday a match they drew 1-1.

Komphela was explaining the club’s fall in the abscence of captain Siphiwe Tshabalala and Ivan Bukenya who could have proved so influencial in case the side when for the three points.

He told kick off: “Bukenya came back from the [Uganda] national team and, if you remember very well, in the last match against Orlando Pirates – in the [Telkom Knockout] semi-final – he was taken off after half time due to an injury.

“’Shabba’ sprained his ankle at training and we had to be more careful with him. We had [Bernard] Parker, Siphelele Mthembu and Jabu Manqele, so it was about finding balance in the team, and [Abraw] came from the [Togo] national team so we said, ‘lets try to save him a bit so he can get fresh again’.”

Reneilwe Letsholonyane scored Kaizer Chiefs’ goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time after Kurt Lentjies gave Maritzburg United the lead from the penalty spot in the twentieth minute when Tsepo Masilela handled Philani Zulu’s cross inside the area.
