Police’s quest for their first ever win against SCVU finally came to an end on Friday at Namboole stadium when they beat their bogey side 1-0 to take home maximum points.
The visitors looked the hungriest team for goals right from the beginning of the game as they kept throwing every available ball to the opponent’s area.
Police got 2 back-to-back corners in the early minutes of the game but failed to put the dead balls into maximum use.
Hood Kaweesa and Ben Ocen had their glorious efforts saved by Victoria’s custodian Charles Lukwago right before half time. The visiting side kept attacking that by the end of the first half, the rather fruitless efforts were evident.
Timbe’s boys had recorded six corners with the hosts boasting of none.
Joseph Otieno almost became a villain in the 49th minute when he gave out a ball to the opposing player that nearly gave the opponents their opener.
Kaweesa got unlucky not to put the ball at the back of the net, thanks to Charles Lukwago who was alert all throughout the game and who was also SCVU’s best player on pitch by far. Lukwago punched out the resultant strike to keep his team in contention.
SCVU’s first attempt on goal came in the 75th minute through Nicholas Kagaba’s shot that fell in the safe hands of goalkeeper Douglas Kisembo.
However, the introduction of Semanda in the last 15 minutes of the game somehow awakened the University’s attack as he kept pushing forward forcing the host’s first corner of the day.
This should have given them a not so deserved lead but defender Joseph Sentamu thought otherwise as he kicked out the ball for another corner.
The host’s strategy of defending deep almost paid off but their lack of concentration in the dying minutes of the game sold them out.
The visitors who had waited patiently till the 88th minute scored through their 10th corner taken by Ben Ocen.
Elias Lubambula headed home an inviting corner amidst a shaky Victoria defense to record their first ever win against SCVU.
Yasin Mubiru should have made it 2 in added minutes but by the time his goal went in, the referee had already blown the whistle for a foul on Ben Ochen.
The result keeps the cops third with 24 points same as reigning champions Vipers but with more games played
