16th University Games:
Volleyball Final results (Men):
- Nkumba 3-2 KIU (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13)
Nkumba University outwitted Kampala International University in the finals of the AUUS Games at Busoga University in Iganga district.
Tony Lakony’s charges drew first blood when they took the first set 25-21, KIU laboured to keep their serves on court while Nkumba got almost everything right to gain advantage.
The Kansanga side adjusted in the second set as they raced into an early 12-8 lead with their net defense improving to tame Nkumba’s Jackson Mari. They took the set 25-22 to level the scores at 1-1.
Nkumba’s start to the third set is what they needed, Mari’s offense was sharp and Kokasa Opejo connected quite well with setter Julius Nuwahereza to penetrate through the middle to hand Nkumba the advantage going into the forth set.
KIU were not done yet as they got off to a brilliant start in the forth period, they took a 6-2 lead early into the set before stretching the lead to 22-12.
They limited the Entebbe road side to just 15 points as they took the forth set to force a decisive set.
The start to the decisive was a point-for-point affair with the sides tying at 2-2 and 4-4 before Nkumba broke away to take an 8-5 lead before the sides switched sides.
The lead increased to 11-7 with KIU setter Sylvestre Ndayisaba switching from Ivan Ongom to William Mudaheuka for offense, the result isn’t what the team craved as the Rwandan failed to penetrate the Nkumba block.
KIU captain Jean Luc Mbonyuwuntumana went to the service box with Nkumba leading 144-13, he abandoned his routine jump service only for the ball to find the net and send Nkumba players and fans into frenzy.
Nkumba have now won the previous three editions of the University games and have taken gold in both men and women categories.
