CHAN 2016 Rwanda:

16th January – 7th February 2016

Veteran striker, Geofrey Sserunkuma is a rare breed of a footballer blessed by a unique degree of humility.

From the facial expression, general body posture, movement on and off the ball with the finesse as plays the beautiful game, Sserunkuma’s personality could be wrapped up as simple.

The 32 years lanky forward, who currently turns out for Lweza football Club in the Azam Uganda Premier League was one of the surprise call ups among the 41 man preliminary squad to the team.

To the man of the moment himself, who had diligently served for the national team in the yester-years, the call up is more or less equated to the first summon he was accorded 14 years ago in 2002;

Being called to the Uganda Cranes after three years is a dream come true. It is like my first call up to the national team and i have to work hard to prove my worth.

The former Police, KCCA, Nalubaale, St George (Ethiopia) and South African sides Bidvest Wits, Vasco Da Gama, Bloemfontein Celtics forward brings to the side a wealth of experience.

Uganda Cranes head coach, Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has already expressed delight of having two veteran players in Sserunkuma and Sentongo on the side as a way of guiding the largely inexperienced crop of players.

“I expect the experienced players to guide these young players on the team and we build to have a gel between the youth and experienced” Micho said as he named his squad a few days ago.

Sserunkuma has so far proved impressive in the two opening sessions conducted at the African Bible University and Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Perhaps, he faces a stiff battle from the current league top scorer Robert Sentongo and a host of young strikers; Frank Kalanda, Ceasar Okhuti, Francis Olaki, Nelson Senkatuka and Karim Ndugwa.

Micho names the final 23 man squad on Wednesday.

The team enters residential training on Tuesday at the FUFA technical center in Njeru. Whilst in Njeru, the team will host two high profile build up matches between Gabon and Cameroon on the 10th and 13th January 2016 respectively.

Uganda opens the CHAN campaign against West African opposition, Mali on January 19th 2016 in Umganda stadium, Rubavu town, a boarder town with Congo DRC.
