On January 14, 2016 at around 8.15 am, I opened my laptop as usual to check on what is doing the round in the news worldwide.

On logging into my Facebook account, nearly all posts were about the demise of fellow sports scribe Mark Makumbi.

At first, I didn’t take it serious as on a number of occasions, he has been declared dead while still alive by some goons on social media who need attention at whatever cost.

Devastating News

Nevertheless, the too many posts about the devastating news prompted me to tune to CBS FM; Makumbi’s place of work and true, ‘Mark’ as famously was pronounced dead.

I immediately sunk to the concrete, my legs weakened, my vision blurring from tears. In shock, I said “Ina Lillahi Wa Ina Lillahi Raj’una” translated as “We surely belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.”

The Mark I knew

To be sincere, I didn’t know Makumbi beyond his job but the little I knew; he was one of the best and most versatile human being.

When he did sports, he would make you think that was the only thing he could do better. Then Mark the ‘Kadongokamu’ presenter and singer would also make you think that was what he knew.

Above all that, Makumbi has been one of the most creative persons in the industry. The way he went about Transfer News would make you think a move has already been orchestrated.

Then his ‘Byensangula’ section on CBS FM wasn’t only entertaining but educative as well.

In this, he would dig deeper beyond what most of us see.

As a commentator, his combination with David Lumansi was always comical but one I rarely missed.

Another character I learnt from him was the fact that he spoke his mind regardless of whether you differ or not.

Not any words can describe the feeling but all we can do is pray for HIS SOUL TO REST IN ETERNAL PEACE!

Mark Makumbi, you left a legacy!
