In contrast to Bob Bibaso’s hard fought victory in the last round of the 2nd phase that granted him qualification for the 3rd phase of the Chess Olympiad qualifiers, Haruna Nsubuga’s nightmare came to reality when he drew and lost the 7th and 8th round respectively on Saturday, January 30.
The Candidate Master finished 19th on the table after managing only 3.5 points from 8 rounds.
In the related development, unseeded Edgar Ntende maintained his momentum as he finished 1st on the table with 6.0 points.
Fide Master, Harold Wanyama who admittedly had a slow start, finished 6th with 5.0 points after drawing with top seed Arthur Segwanyi in the eighth round.
“I had a slow start but the strategy in this phase was to qualify which I did. I had to be in top twelve. I know I can’t fail to qualify because I know I cannot lose to anyone when I am focused” said Wanyama.
Next is determining the top five from the twelve who qualified for the 3rd phase.
Games resume this Saturday, February 6.
The best five will represent Uganda in the Chess Olympiad due September in Baku Azerbaijan.
