Women African Qualifiers, Tuesday Fixtures
Final: Egypt vs Cameroon
Bronze medal match: Kenya vs Algeria
What would be a dream final to decide who will represent Africa at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic games in women’s volleyball, will be a third place playoff on Tuesday in Yaoundé.
That’s after nine time African champions Kenya were eliminated by Egypt 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 16-15, 25-20, 19-17) while Algeria who have represented Africa at the last two editions of the games were defeated 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) by hosts Cameroon at the Women’s African Olympic Qualifier.
Kenya have been boasting of fine form from last year that had them qualify from the FIVB Grand Prix Group Three to Group Two, on top of winning the African title without dropping a single set. The side also won gold at the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville, a feat they last achieved in 1999.
But the change of guard after head coach David Lun’gaho, the experienced duo of skipper and middle blocker Brackside Agala together with setter Janet Wanja did take something away from the team. Together with Ruth Jepengetich who is injured and Easther Wagenci who was sidelined.
Promoted to now technical director Lun’gaho is in Cameroon overseeing proceeding as his successor Japheth Munala takes charge of the side now captained by Mercy Moim.
Botswana upset Tunisia 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 15-25, 15-10) to clinch the 5th place, on Sunday, Botswana had beaten Uganda in a long Marathon 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 10-25, 15-11) to finish 3rd of Pool B.
