Khartoum Al Watani Ghanaian Coach James Kwesi Appiah has hailed Ugandan attacking midfielder Michael Birungi as a good player that is willing to learn.
Birungi joined the Sudan Premier league side in December and was part of the side that lost to SC Villa 2-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round of the CAF Confederations Cup.
“Mike (Birungi) is a very good player,” Appiah told Kawowo Sports. “The good thing is that he is a player who plays to learn. Some players some time think they are up there,” he added.
The ex-Black Stars tactician also lauded the former Utoda FC player for adhering to instructions.
He listens well to the instructions given to him and his movement around in the pitch is good so am really pleased to have him.
On the double header against SC Villa, Appiah said his side were unfortunate to bow out despite being the better side over two legs.
In the first leg, we did everything, hit the post thrice and created 3-4 clear cut opportunities but we lost. In football sometimes you create all the opportunities but if you are not lucky, you might miss all the chances and that’s football for you.
Although he didn’t want to blame the downpour that saw the game abandoned for over 15 minutes, he believes it did affect their game.
I can’t blame the rain but truth be told, before it, we were moving the ball very well and after it, our style was affected as the ball couldn’t freely move on the surface.
The visitors bosses possession but lacked the cutting edge as SC Villa held on to their first half goal that came after Khartoum had missed a penalty.
“They defended deeply which made it difficult for us and credit to my players as they did everything but ended up on the losing side.”
