Sweden based coach Sam Rukundo has backed Uganda National Boxing team duo Ronald Sserugo and Kennedy Katende ahead of the Africa Olympic Qualifiers due March 9-20 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Aiba-certified tactician urged the boxers to target qualification, a repeat of their 2008 Summer Olympics show in Beijing that had them compete at the world stage.

“In my view, Sserugo is in good shape, he is tireless and he is ranked number one in Sweden. He is unbeaten in all his amateur bouts.

“He was also part of the Swedish national team that faced countries like Finland, and he has never lost, even once. They even wanted him to represent Sweden at the Olympics, only that he is not a Swedish citizen,” Rukundo who lives in Sweden told Daily Monitor.

“Katende is a serious man when it comes to boxing,” he added.

Uganda Boxing Federation president Kenneth Gimugu also recently backed the Bombers, saying it was ” a chance” for the boxers to “try their luck and qualify for the Olympic Games.”

Selected team for the qualifiers: Mutebi Umar (Light fly weight 49Kg), Marvin Omomdi (Flyweight 52Kg), Antnus Mugerwa (Bantamweight 56Kg), Sula Segawa (Lightweight 60Kg), Tony Mukiibi (Light Welterweight 64Kg), Muzamir Kakande (Welterweight 69Kg), Reagan Segawa (Middleweight 75Kg) and Willy Kyakonye (Heavyweight 91Kg).
