The reigning Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Sports Personality Of The Year Peace Proscovia made her mark on the basketball and netball courts, for clubs (KCCA Leopards and NIC) and country.
She helped the national basketball team, the Gazelles to Zone V glory and qualifying to the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville and the Afro Basketball in Cameroon in the process.
Proscovia was also the spine of the She Cranes that qualified for the 2015 Netball World Cup in Australia.
While in Australia, all opponents realized that to tame Uganda someone needed to play good defense on the Goal Shooter and that’s when another star emerged, her name is Racheal Nanyonga.
Standing at 152cm and the shortest Goal Attack at the World Cup, Nanyonga stood out with her shooting ability.
It’s because of that performance in Sydney that the USPA nominated Nanyonga alongside golfer Ronald Otile and bodybuilder Ivan Byekwaso for the Sports Personality Of The Year.
First of all, am humbled by the nomination, secondly am one person who has always believed in myself and I have every reason to believe ahead of the awards that I deserve to win it
Nanyonga told Kawowo Sports before adding.
Before the World Cup, we had so many tournaments but I was always left behind because of one reason or another, sometimes the reasons were related to injuries, when I was fit I was told I wasn’t fit, so when I got my chance at the world Cup, I told myself I had to take it
At the World Cup, as Uganda defeated Zambia 74–38, Nanyonga made 10 points from her 14 attempts putting her shooting at 71%.
She was 24/29 (83%) in the 61–40 win over Fiji and 21/23 (91%) in the 47–49 loss to Wales, in the 50–40 loss to South Africa at the quarterfinals, the NIC players was for 22/29 (76%).
Uganda met Wales again in the placement for position seven and lost 64–41, Nanyonga was for 4/5 (80%).
At the Awards night, Nanyonga will also be a recipient of the Netball Player of the year award.
