In a bid to aid the Uganda Hockey Association and enrich players with distinctive Hockey skills, Hugo Pley, a French Hockey player who features for one of the local clubs together with All Way Sports (a French Association) organised a five day Hockey training camp at Lugogo under the project name ‘Hockey sticks for Uganda’.

The Hockey clinic that started on Monday May 30th, attracted participants from different levels including primary and Secondary schools, and club level.

Speaking to Kawowo sports, Pley, the Project Coordinator says it was a unique experience taking the kids through all the necessary training.

“It was such an experience teaching these kids how to pay” Pley said. “If given the financial support needed, Hockey could become one of the biggest sports in the country. The talent is there and the turn up was encouraging” he continued.

Hockey sticks for Uganda is a project masterminded by Pley who after developing “interest” in Ugandan Hockey, decided to give a helping hand.

“I came to Uganda early last year and I would come here (Lugogo) to watch games. I picked interest and thought to myself what I can do to help, that was when I posted something about it on Facebook”

“I received positive comments, among them were reactions from these Hockey coaches Stephanie (Drieux) and Charles (Granier) who promised 100 sticks”

“They were in France so I had to go back. I came back here in November with 60 sticks, they later followed with the remaining 40”

Pley plays for a local club Wananchi sports club in the National Hockey League.

Drieux and Granier are former French first Division players who also played for their national Hockey team. They are currently coaches in the French first Division.

The training camp ended today.
