The National Chess League returns today at Hotel Africana with what could be title deciding fixtures as City Chess Club take on both their competitors, DMARK and Kireka.
City play Kireka (one of the title contenders) in the third round before locking horns with defending champions DMARK in the fourth round.
Having sat out his team’s first two rounds, the day will see IM Elijah Emojong feature for his new side for the first time since joining them early this year.
The former Olympian will open his season against tough opposition fighting for the title.
Emojong, formerly at Makindye is expected to face his former teammate Harold Wanyama who now plays for Kireka and his fellow IM, DMARK’s Arthur Ssegwanyi who will also be playing for the first time this season as the three men try to help their teams lift this year’s title.
In an interview with Kawowo Sports, Emojong said his side is strong enough to challenge for the title and as an individual, he’s all systems go.
“I have been waiting for this moment. I may look a bit rusty because I haven’t played Chess in a while but I’m excited and ready for any kind of challenge”
“We face very good sides in Kireka and DMARK on Sunday but we’re equally good. We are not just participants but title challengers”
“This is why I joined city.”
City have never won the league title but have come second in the last two seasons.
They currently lie second in the league standings.
