Usually when a new season is about to start, there is always that nice aroma from the orgaisners because they want to start with a bang.
Players too have the hunger to go out and showcase their new skills, improvements they have made in the preseason while the fans are desperate to declare their allegiances to the teams they call the best.
None of that was on show as the 2016 or 2016/2017 Volleyball League volleyed off at different grounds last weekend.
Club managers needed clarification from their governing body (Uganda Volleyballs Federation) about a few changes like the introduction of a second serie and fourth serie for the women and men respectively without the knowledge of congress.
Much as the managers had their way, UVF was still playing their old tricks of threatening to throw teams out of the league if they didn’t comply with the sponsorship manual that is only known to them.
The two new series were dealt away with as the season started at MUBS Nakawa, KIU Kansanga and the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
Traditionally the two teams that won the league and National Club Championship last season play the league opener; it was the case in the ladies’ game as holders Ndejje Elites defeated Vision Volleyball Camp 3-1.
The would be men’s opening tie between league winners Nemostars and National Championship Winners Sport-S wasn’t played and the date is yet to be set.
Instead former champions KAVC and newly promoted Mattrixx took fans through a dull encounter that the former won in straight sets.
Nemostars also defeated Sport-S Tigers on Sunday 3-0 (25- 22, 25 – 17, 25 – 12) while Sport-S were too much for UCU Doves as they also managed a 3-0 (26 – 24, 25 – 20, 25 – 14) victory.
The league will be resuming next weekend but fixtures are yet to be released as teams and their fans brace themselves to one long dramatic season ahead.
