The PSL have approved Vasco da Gama’s change of name to Stellenbosch FC.
The development follows the relocation of the club to Stellenbosch.
The NFD outfit announced the name change on 2nd August 2016.
PSL released a statement confirming the move;
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Executive Committee has approved an application from National First Division side, Vasco Da Gama for a name change in accordance to Article 31 of the NSL Constitution.Vasco Da Gama FC will now be known as Stellenbosch FC.
The club will be based in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.
This will be a permanent base for both the SA Sevens rugby team, the Blitzboks, and Western Province Rugby Union.
Club CEO, Edries Burton explained the switch;
The name ‘Stellenbosch FC’ shows our intention of creating a club that symbolizes the Cape Winelands community.
We are on a pathway of building something special, and we want to take this community with us.
Our club is now based in Stellenbosch and we are fully entrenched in the Stellenbosch and Cape Winelands community.
The community and the people have been extremely supportive towards us and our move to Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch FC is home to a Uganda player, Chrizetom Ntambi with established player like Alcardo Van Graan hailing from the same locality.
A rising player Luke le Roux, was born and raised in Stellenbosch.
He was recently promoted to Stellenbosch FC and will play NFD football for the first time this season.
Le Roux has been one of the outstanding players for South Africa’s Under-17 national side during the ongoing Cosafa U17 tournament in Namibia, signalling a very exciting chapter for football in the Winelands region.
