The Uganda football season finally got underway on Friday with eight premier league played at various venues.
In short, all the 16 teams were in action on a day that witnessed the locals were thirsty as fans flocked to stadia to catch a glimpse of their local stars but what headlined day one, Ismael Kiyonga writes the highlights.
Two wins registered
Bar Express and KCCA, no other side registered victory on day one. The Kasasiro, whose match against JMC Hippos was televised, won 2-1 against the visitors at Phillip Omondi stadium, Lugogo while the Red Eagles came from a goal down to beat Lweza.
The rest of the matches ended in stalemates and only had goals – Vipers against Bright Stars as the rest ended goalless.
Eight Goals scored
On average, it was a goal per match as only eight goals were scored. KCCA and Express netted the most; two while Lweza, JMC Hippos, Bright Stars and Vipers scored one each.
The rest of the clubs will have to wait for the next round of games to score their first season goals.
Ochaya does it again
Like it was last season, KCCA’s Joseph Ochaya scored the season’s first goal. The MVP scored inside 20 minutes against visitors JMC Hippos at Lugogo just like he had done against Sadolin Paints a year ago at Bugembe.
Debutants dominate score sheets
Of the eight goals scored, seven were scored by debutants. At Lugogo, Geoffrey Sserunkuma netted the winner, Herman Wasswa scored twice for Express after another debut boy Karim Ndugwa had scored Lweza.
Elsewhere, Vianney Sekajugo scored for JMC Hippos, Ibrahim Kayiwa for Vipers and Fred Segujja did for Bright Stars.
Only Ochaya was a non-debutant from the scorers on day one.
Another scoring debut for Herman Wasswa
Only once has the striker failed to score on his debut. That was in the 2012 after he signed for SC Villa from Masaka LC.
He scored on his two debuts for KCCA, Masaka LC, and Sofapaka and now Express.
Besides, it’s the third time he has scored on the opening day of the league – netted for SC Villa against Bul in 2012/13, KCCA against Police in 2013/14 and now 2015/16 for the Red Eagles.
