One of Uganda’s representatives at the ongoing World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan Fide Master [FM] Patrick Kawuma has rued a missed opportunity to kill the game after drawing against Angola’s International Master [IM] Aderito Pedro.

Kawuma who had prior to the round won two of Uganda’s first three rounds to help the East Africans enjoy a memorable start to the 42nd edition felt he failed himself against the Angolan.

“I’m quite displeased with myself,” Kawuma, rated 2261 in the FIDE rankings said a few hours after the game in a phone interview with Kawowo Sports.

“I threw away a good game that I should have won, but the good thing is the team won otherwise I might have been inconsolable right now.

“I messed up the win. I just should have won my game rather than drawing,” he regretted.

After losing the sixth round 3-1 to Myanmar, Uganda needed a win to keep their hopes of winning gold in group D alive, and it’s exactly what the team did with them emerging victors at the expense of Angola.

FM Harold Wanyama outwitted IM David Silva who beat him in the recently concluded African Individual Chess Championship held in Uganda.

Having started as a weak link in team Uganda, untitled Farouk Fauza competing in his maiden Olympiad fought tooth and nail to beat FM Aguiar Cristiano as he registered his first victory in the Olympiad.

Kawuma like earlier said drew against Aderito while Simon Gonza lost board three, and the game ended 21/2:11/2 in favour of Uganda. Uganda play Morocco – Africa’s number three seed- in the next round on Saturday at 3pm.
