UCU Canons 77-63 Savio

Ugandan representatives at the ongoing Zone V Club Championship UCU Canons finally found their footing at the event as they defeated home side Savio for their first win in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Having lost their opening two games to Rwandan side Patriots and Kenyan side USIU, UCU needed to recover and they did exactly that after rest day, defeating Savio 77-63 in the second last game of Tuesday.

Savio, backed by the home crowd, started well and were in control at the end of the first quarter, leading 21-16.

The Ugandan outfit stepped up in the second quarter and scored 21 points against Savio’s 15 to take a 1-point lead going into the second half.

Nick Natuhereza’s charges maintained the momentum through the third stanza and went into the final 10 minutes with a 4-point advantage (57-53).

The lead stretched through the 4th quarter and the university side went on to win the game 77-63.

Team captain Jonathan Egau scored a game high 22 points while Andrew Gang, Steven Wundi and Mike Madol added 19, 12 and 11 respectively.

UCU will now entertain Sudanese side Nat. Engineering in their final group game on Wednesday as they search for another win in the Tanzanian capital.

Ugandan sides have registered mixed results thus far.

League winners City Oilers and UCU Lady Canons are yet to test defeat while UCU Canons and KCCA Leopards only won their first games on Tuesday after dismal starts.
