Zamalek 1-0 Mamelodi Sundowns [Sundowns win 3-1 on aggregate]
Uganda Cranes goalie Denis Masinde Onyango has gone into history books as first Ugandan ever to win the CAF Champions League.
This is after his side, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa played to a 1-0 loss Zamalek of Egypt in Alexandria in the 2nd leg of the finals of the continent’s prestigious club completion to win 3-1 on aggregate.
But it wasn’t a good ending to Onyango who was stretchered off just 28 minutes into the game with an injury.
The gigantic goalie had earlier been subjected to a kungfu kick by Morsi which went unpunished by the Gambian referee.
His substitute Wayne Sandilands did well to save a Morsi effort in the first half but 29 minutes after the break, the deadlock was broken by a rampant Zamalek side that had consistently asked questions that the South Africans found answers to.
Nigerian import Stanley Ohawuchi drilled a low shot past the South Africans to send the home fans into frenzy.
From this moment, the Brazilians lived on the edge with the hosts taking the game to them but they did hold to become only the second South African side to lift the CAF competition after Orlando Pirates 21 years ago.
On top of winning US $ 1.5 million prize, Onyango and Mamelodi Sundowns have earned a ticket to represent Africa at the FIFA Club World Cup in December in Japan.
