The 2016 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup hangs in balance with reports showing that Kenya have pulled out of hosting the tournament.
Kenya had recently agreed to host both the Challenge and Kagame Cup competitions after original hosts Sudan pulled out but it appears as though they have backed out.
“Kenya have told us that they are not ready to host the championships which was scheduled to kick-off in late November to early December,” Cecafa secretary Nicolas Musonye said as quoted by BBC Sport.
We are now back to negotiating with Sudan again to see if they can agree to have the event back in Khartoum. Hopefully we should be able to get a conclusive reply by Friday.
Meanwhile, our efforts to speak to Musonye remained futile as he couldn’t pick his known phone numbers while Rogers Mulindwa, the CECAFA Publicist’ numbers were off.
Defending champions Uganda have already started preparations for the competition slated for late November to early December.
Cranes coach Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has summoned his squad to defend the crown they won in Ethiopia last year.
Kenya, who last hosted the tournament in 2013 however are reported to have accepted to host the club championship where Uganda will be represented by Vipers.
Kenya is also preparing to stage the African Nations Championships (Chan) scheduled for 2018.
