Essien believes the nation has done and its high time they stepped up to walk home with the grand prize from Gabon.

Ghana have come close recently, but their loses to Egypt and Ivory Coast in the finals of the 2010 and 2015 are some of the moments they shouldn’t replay and learn from.

“They have done really well. The pressure is still on, the nation wants them to win the AFCON because it’s been a long time and the expectations are high,” Essien told the BBC.

Ghana seek their fifth AFCON title off their fourth that they claimed way back in 1982.
